In the course of the 10^th century, the hollow square infantry formation became the main order of battle of the Byzantine army. The present work will examine the development of the hollow square as reflected in the military treatise Praecepta militaria. In addition to our main source, examples will be given from other Byzantine military treatises that note the presence of the infantry formation and its application. The manuscript tradition of the treatise Praecepta militaria will also be examined – its authorship, dating, and briefly presented its contents.
